Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
1247 AM PDT Wed Apr 17 2024

.SYNOPSIS...High pressure will result in an extended period of
warm weather across the region. Well above normal temperatures,
breezy afternoon winds, and dry conditions are expected through the
early part of next week.
&&

.SHORT TERM...through Thursday night.

Looking upstream of the west coast this morning satellite shows an
extensive field of mid and high clouds over the eastern Pacific.
Embedded in all that cloud cover is a weak trough located near
30N/145W. The GEFS keeps a west to northwest flow aloft across the
Great Basin and Desert Southwest through Thursday night. As the weak
trough nears the coast by Thursday that extensive area of mid and
high clouds will advance inland over the region. Warmer today with
highs topping out about 10 degrees above normal. High will be
similar or maybe a degree or two lower Thursday due to thicker cloud
coverage.

.LONG TERM...Friday through Tuesday.

Warm and dry weather will remain the primary theme for the long term
as a dominant ridge of high pressure resides over the region. A very
weak disturbance embedded in the flow pattern will drift through the
region on Friday which will primarily bring some passing high
clouds. Thereafter, a broad ridge will expand across the western US
with heights rising well above normal. The temperatures will respond
accordingly with afternoon highs climbing into the 90s for most of
the Mojave Desert including Las Vegas, where they will remain
through early next week. Temperatures in the lowest elevations will
even approach or eclipse 100 degrees, particularly across Lake
Havasu, the Mohave Valley, and Death Valley.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...95% chance of winds less than 8 knots
through 18z, with wind direction remaining south-southwest through
sunrise and becoming more variable afterwards. Breezy southwest
winds arrive in the mid-to-late afternoon, between 22z and 00z. Once
they push in, the chance of 10+ knot winds increases to 50-70% and
persists through sunset. Gusts of 15-20 knots expected during this
time. By 03z, gusts should wane but speeds remain around 8-10 knots
until 07z. Mostly clear skies this morning, with increasing high
clouds this afternoon and evening around 25kft.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Light winds this morning, with south-southwest breezes
of 10-20 knots developing at all TAF sites (except KBIH) this
afternoon. At KBIH, breezy northwest winds of 10-20 knots are
forecast to develop around 22z, with speeds falling below 10 knots
around 03z. SCT-BKN clouds at or above 15kft will spread east
throughout the day, encompassing most of the region by the late
afternoon.
