...September 7th extreme downburst wind damages in southern Ransom
County and northwest Sargent County in North Dakota...

A thunderstorm squall line moved into far western Ransom and Sargent
Counties, in southeast North Dakota, around 245 PM CDT, on 7
September 2016. This storm developed very large hail into northern
Vivian Township, in far northwest Sargent County, and then a swath
of damaging downburst winds and hail across northwest Sargent County
and southern Ransom County through 330 PM CDT.

In southern Bale and Aliceton Townships, south of Lisbon ND, several
farmsteads received extreme wind damages. These include one machine
shed which was blown across the road and into other farm buildings.
One polebarn was completely collapsed. Several large steel grain
bins were either popped off their pads and tumbled, or they were
crushed in place. Along Highway 32, nearly a mile of wooden power
poles were either cracked or completely snapped. While at several
other locales, one or more power poles were cracked. Throughout this
area, numerous pine, cottonwood, or oak trees were either snapped or

Much of southern Bale and Aliceton Townships likely experienced
widespread downburst winds of from 80 to 90 mph, between 305 and 315
PM CDT, with localized peak winds reaching up to 115 mph, as
evidenced by the damages.

the most extreme wind damages appear to have initiated across
northern Vivian (Sargent Co.) and southern Bale (Ransom Co.)
Townships and then expanded east northeastward into southeast Ransom
County, diffusing and weakening as the squall line eventually moved
north of Milnor and Mcleod.

An NWS Storm Damage Assessment was conducted across these areas
earlier in the day.
