Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
247 PM SST Wed May 8 2024

.Discussion...
Latest satellite data shows a line of convective clouds over the
territory due to a cold front. This feature is at the boundary of
a ridge to the east and a low pressure to the south. As the cold
front lingers in the area through the new week, expect numerous
showers and a gentle breeze tonight through Friday. Although cold
weather is usually associated with a cold front, it appears that
the cold air behind the front will not push over the territory
through the forecast period.

Nonetheless, enhanced showers and winds will follow Saturday
through Sunday as a ridge builds behind the aforementioned low
pressure system. The potential for flooding is forecast to
increase as model trends show higher QPE values for this time. In
addition, windy conditions may also prompt a wind advisory
depending on the strength of the ridge.

By Monday, the cold front will diminish in the area as the
high pressure system moves further east. Expect an easterly breeze
with scattered showers through Tuesday before a low pressure
system develops over the territory. It is unclear to what is
prompting this development, but we`ll continue to monitor later
forecasts to see how this plays out.

.Long term...
Current wave heights via satellite data shows seas around 5 to 7
feet. No significant swells or winds are expected until Friday
night as the aforementioned ridge builds in the area. Model data
increases wave heights up to 10 feet Friday night, which will last
through next Wednesday as trade winds lingers near. Expect
advisory thresholds to be met over the weekend that will likely
continue through midweek.
