AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION FOR AMERICAN SAMOA AND INDEPENDENT SAMOA
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PAGO PAGO AS
220 PM SST MON MAY 30 2016

.SHORT TERM...
TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT...SATELLITE IMAGERIES SHOW
SCATTERED LOW CLOUDS OVER THE ISLANDS AS THE RIDGE TO THE
SOUTHEAST SLOWLY MIGRATES EASTWARD. ACTIVE SURFACE TROUGH TO THE
NORTH REMAINS NEARLY STATIONARY. RAOB FROM THIS AFTERNOON DEPICTS
A STABLE PROFILE. MODELS SUGGEST THAT BREEZY EAST WINDS WILL
PERSIST ACROSS THE ISLANDS TONIGHT AND REST OF THE SHORT TERM.
MOST OF THE MOISTURE WILL BE TO THE NORTH. HOWEVER WITH BREEZY
EAST WINDS...EXPECT MINIMAL SHOWERS TO PASS ACROSS THE ISLANDS AT
TIMES. THEREFORE...EXPECT ISOLATED SHOWERS AND BREEZY EAST WINDS
DURING THE SHORT TERM.

.LONG TERM...
THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY...STEEP PRESSURE GRADIENT FROM AN ACTIVE
SURFACE TROUGH APPROACHING FROM THE NORTHEAST AND A STRONG HIGH
PRESSURE TO THE SOUTHWEST WILL ENHANCE SHOWERS AND TRADES ACROSS
THE ISLANDS ON SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT. AS THE HIGH PRESSURE
TO THE SOUTH MOVES FARTHER EAST...THUS WEAKENS THE PRESSURE
GRADIENT OVER THE ISLANDS ON TUESDAY. HOWEVER THE SURFACE WILL
PERSIST AND REMAINS OVER THE ISLANDS FOR THE REST OF THE FORECAST.
THEREFORE EXPECT INCLEMENT OVER THE ISLANDS DURING THE WEEKEND AND
THE NEW WEEK.

&&

.MARINE...
WITH BREEZY EAST WINDS...SEAS OF 7 TO 9 FT WILL PERSIST ACROSS THE
ISLANDS THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT. SEAS WILL ELEVATE 9 TO 12 FT ON
SATURDAY AS STRONG TRADES AND SOUTHERN SWELLS MOVE OVER THE
TERRITORY AND COASTAL WATERS.
