Weather Summary for Portions of the Central Plains
National Weather Service Hastings NE
527 AM CST Wed Jan 17 2018

Now that our bitterly cold spell of the past few days is pretty much
behind us...we are down to two main stories in the latest seven-day
forecast for south central Nebraska and north central Kansas. The
first one is a fairly impressive warm-up that will define the
remainder of the work week. Despite the rather cold start this
morning with wind chill readings around -10 in many places...high
temperatures this afternoon will jump about 20 degrees warmer than
those of yesterday...with most areas well into the 30s. Then...the
January thaw really accelerates Thursday into Friday...with readings
climbing well into the 40s and 50s...and perhaps even low 60s
Friday...especially in southern and western portions of our local
area. Not surprisingly...these very mild readings will not last
forever...with a cool-down expected this weekend...albeit not nearly
as cold as what we just experienced. However...the bigger story late
this weekend into early next week is a possible winter storm that
could bring accumulating snow and strong winds to the
region...especially between Sunday morning and Monday morning.
Because this possible storm is still a good 4 to 5 days
away...there are still a MULTITUDE of question marks regarding its
exact track...exact timing and especially exact snow amounts.
Generally speaking...we do not start releasing specific and detailed
snow amount forecasts until a storm gets within roughly 3 days of
occurring...so expect to start seeing and hearing more of this sort
of information later this week. In the meantime...just keep in mind
that snow and blowing snow could make a return to the Central Plains
especially between Sunday morning and Monday morning...so please
stay up to date with the latest forecasts as details of this storm
system gradually come into focus.
