Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Honolulu HI
405 PM HST Mon Apr 22 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
Moderate to breezy northeast to east trade winds will prevail
through the week, with clouds and showers favoring windward and
mauka locations overnight and into the morning hours. Trade winds
may ease slightly this weekend as the ridge weakens to the north.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Satellite and radar imagery show a band of moisture approaching
the islands from the east this afternoon. This will bring a slight
uptick in windward and mauka showers to areas west of Maui through
tonight. Guidance continues to show this band of moisture briefly
stalling through the middle of the week which will support an
increase in windward and mauka showers, with some showers possibly
spilling into leeward areas of the smaller islands. Otherwise,
guidance shows high pressure remaining north of the state this
week. This will bring moderate to breezy northeast to easterly
trade wind, with clouds and showers favoring windward and mauka
areas, especially overnight and into the early morning hours.
Trade winds look to ease slightly over the upcoming weekend and
into early next week as high pressure weakens to the north as a
low develops far northwest of the state but clouds and showers
will continue to favor windward and mauka areas.

&&

.AVIATION...
Moderate to breezy trades will deliver limited clouds and showers
to windward areas for the remainder of this afternoon. Visible
imagery shows a healthy band of showers approaching the islands
from the east. This band will bring a higher probability of MVFR
cigs/vsbys mainly windward and mauka tonight. AIRMET Sierra for
mountain obscuration may be needed for part or all of the Maui
through Kauai corridor tonight. AIRMET Tango for lee turb may also
be needed as trade winds further strengthen overnight.

No AIRMETs in effect.

&&

.MARINE...
High pressure north of the state will slowly drift east and
strengthen over the next several days, resulting in fresh to
strong trade winds over the islands. A Small Craft Advisory
remains in effect through Tuesday night for most waters around
Oahu to Big Island due to winds.

Surf heights along all shores will remain below advisory thresholds
through the weekend. A small, medium period northwest swell
will arrive late Wednesday and continue through Saturday. Choppy,
rough surf expected all week along east facing shores due to the
trade winds. South facing shores will continue to see small
background swell pulses through rest of the the week.
