...Impact Based Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and Tornado
Warnings Starting Wednesday May 10, 2017...

Effective Wednesday May 10, 2017, any Severe Thunderstorm Warnings
(SVR) issued by the National Weather Service in San Diego will
include HAIL and WIND tags at the bottom of the product. A SVR could
also have a TORNADO tag if there is a small chance that a tornado
could occur within the severe thunderstorm.

Also effective Wednesday May 10, 2017, any Tornado Warnings (TOR)
issued by the National Weather Service in San Diego will include a
TORNADO tag, and possibly a HAIL tag as well.

In addition to these tags, additional descriptive Hazard, Source,
and Impact sections will be included in SVRs and TORs. These changes
also apply to Severe Weather Statements (SVS) that follow-up TORs
and SVRs.

The tornado, hail and wind tags are used to describe the expected
magnitude of each threat. The hazard, source and impact sections are
added to provide extra information on the expected weather threats,
the source that prompted the warning, and the expected impacts
respectively. In extremely rare circumstances, a TORNADO DAMAGE
THREAT tag could be included in Tornado Warnings if the tornado
damage threat is expected to be significant.

Here is an test example of the new format:

* At 757 AM PST, a severe thunderstorm was located near Ocotillo,
  moving northeast at 25 mph.

  HAZARD...70 mph wind gusts and size hail.

  SOURCE...Radar indicated.

  IMPACT...Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect considerable
           tree damage. Wind damage is also likely to mobile homes,
           roofs, and outbuildings.

* This severe thunderstorm will remain over mainly rural areas of
  southeastern San Diego county.


For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of
a building.
