When a severe thunderstorm watch is issued for your area, it
means that weather conditions are favorable for the development
of thunderstorms with damaging winds and large hail. At this
point in time you should have a plan of action to protect
yourself and your property should a severe thunderstorm move
into your area.

When the national weather service issues a severe thunderstorm
warning, it means damaging thunderstorms are imminent or
occurring in a particular area.

A severe thunderstorm has the potential to produce damaging winds
near 60 mph or higher, or hail one inch in diameter or larger.
remember, any severe thunderstorm has the capability to produce
a tornado.

You should treat severe thunderstorms as a serious threat. Some
severe thunderstorms can generate powerful downburst winds in
excess of 100 mph. Winds at this speed will move cars, demolish
mobile homes and barns, severely damage homes and buildings,
and uproot hundreds or thousands of large trees. Powerful
downburst winds can cause as much damage as tornadoes.

Here are a few safety tips:

* Stay away from windows, thunderstorm winds can blow them in.

* Avoid using electrical appliances and computers when
thunderstorms are in your area, lightning can travel through
the electrical wires of your home or business.

* If you are outside when thunderstorms approach, go into a
  sturdy building.

* Powerful thunderstorm winds can sometimes push out several
miles ahead of rain associated with the storm, or they can
  occur within the rain band.

* Heavy rains can accompany severe thunderstorms, leading to
flash flooding. Stay out of ravines, and other low areas where
  water tends to quickly collect.

If you are driving into a flooded area, turn around.
