...Water levels are high or forecast to have significant rises for
the following rivers or creeks: Flat River at Smyrna...Thornapple
River at Hastings...
.Snow should be the main form of precipitation through the weekend
and temperatures should be mostly below freezing. This should keep
the ice on area rivers steady. Unfortunately, we have high river
levels and additional minor flooding is possible. Ice in the
rivers will also impact river levels, and could cause levels to
rapidly fluctuate. The following forecast is based on observed and
forecast 48 hour precipitation.
For the Flat River Near Smyrna... the latest stage was 4.4 feet at 10
AM Thursday. No flooding is forecast. The maximum stage forecast
is 5.1 feet Saturday early afternoon. Flood stage is 8.5 feet.
For the Thornapple River Above Hastings... the latest stage was 4.3
feet at 11 AM Thursday. No flooding is forecast. The maximum stage
forecast is 5.1 feet early Sunday morning. Flood stage is 7.0 feet.
At 5.0 feet... River is bankfull. Expect minor flooding of low
lying areas and farmland adjacent to the river.
Safety message... Caution is urged when walking near riverbanks.
