Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Huntsville AL
551 AM CDT Sun May 19 2024

...New AVIATION...

.NEAR TERM...
(Today)
Issued at 254 AM CDT Sun May 19 2024

Areas of fog have begun to develop early this morning, thanks to
a moist boundary layer from earlier rainfall -- mostly notably
across far northwest Alabama where skies have cleared. Elsewhere,
scattered to broken decks of low stratus continue to persist
across most of southern middle Tennessee and northern Alabama.
Here, fog has been more patchy in nature, but is locally dense,
especially along the Cumberland Plateau. As result of these trends
and the expected clearing sky by daybreak, we have issued a Dense
Fog Advisory for the entire forecast area through 14z. After 14z,
fog should begin to dissipate as heating/mixing begins and the
end result will be a very nice day. Ample sunshine will help push
temperatures into the low to mid 80s by the afternoon hours,
despite the light northeasterly flow.

.SHORT TERM...
(Tonight through Wednesday)
Issued at 254 AM CDT Sun May 19 2024

Another clear/calm night with moist boundary layer conditions
will once again creating an environment favorable for patchy fog.
High pressure will build into the area early this week, with
mostly sunny/dry conditions pushing highs into the mid to upper
80s both Monday and Tuesday. A mid/upper trough lifting into the
Great Lakes on Wednesday will force a weak front SE into the Mid
South. We could see some additional cloud cover on Wednesday and
even a very low (20%) chance for a shower/thunderstorm in the
afternoon in northwest Alabama. However, the main theme with the
forecast for Wednesday will be the warmth as highs return to the
85-90 degree range once again.

&&

.LONG TERM...
(Wednesday night through Saturday)
Issued at 254 AM CDT Sun May 19 2024

The aforementioned cold front will clip the Tennessee Valley
Wednesday night into Thursday, bringing low to medium (30-60%)
chances for showers and thunderstorms -- before this activity
tapers off Thursday night. We may stay in an active pattern to
kick off the Memorial Day holiday weekend, thanks to zonal flow
aloft allowing a couple of shortwaves to ripple through the area
both Friday and Saturday. This will bring some additional chances
for showers and thunderstorms both days. Despite the cloud cover,
temperatures should still reach the low to perhaps mid 80s each
day.

.AVIATION...
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 551 AM CDT Sun May 19 2024

Patchy dense fog will gradually dissipate by 13-14z. This fog may
briefly impact wither terminal, dropping visibilities to IFR
levels. By mid/late morning, clouds will begin to scatter out and
a return to VFR conditions is forecast through the remainder of
the period.
