...Winter Begins at 544 am EST...

The Winter Solstice will occur at 544 am EST. Later today, around
noon, the sun will appear to be nearly overhead at the Tropic of
Capricorn. This is the lowest point the sun will appear at solar
zenith during the year. The Tropic of Capricorn is located along 23.5
degrees south latitude, in the southern hemisphere. This position is
about 3320 miles south of Key West. If clouds are not obscuring the
sun around noon today, you will notice a rather lengthy shadow
visible next to all towering objects. This is due to the lower sun
angle at this time of year.

Today will feature the fewest daylight hours of the entire year,
with 10 hours and 36 minutes of daylight. In contrast, the total
amount of daylight on the summer solstice is 13 hours and 40 minutes.

Enjoy your winter, and Happy Holidays from your Florida Keys National
Weather Service in Key West!
