Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
215 PM SST Sun May 5 2024

.Short term...

A rainy weather pattern remains over American Samoa as a trough
has stalled over the region and a low pressure system to the west
of Samoa continuing to bring moisture from the north. Satellite
imagery from this morning and early afternoon shows thunderstorms
in the vicinity of the territory. Cloudy and rainy weather will
continue through Monday along with the potential of thunderstorms
as instability remaining high. Winds will remain up to around 10
mph from the north, but gusts may occur in localized
thunderstorms.

The weather pattern begins to change on Tuesday as the
aforementioned low pressure system moves south of American Samoa
and will help bring the abundant amount of moisture with it.
Even though showers will become less numerous, rainfall is still
likely in the passing form along with breaks in the clouds.
Northerly winds remain light.

.Long term...

As the aforementioned low pressure system moves further south from
mid to late week, the risk of rain decreases. The risk of showers
will remain numerous, but in the passing form with a mix of sun
and clouds. A light north/northwesterly wind remains through the
week and finally getting back to a weather pattern where rainfall
amounts will be back to normal with easterly flow by the weekend.
As winds remaining weak, humid conditions will remain in the
middle to late week.

.Marine...

The latest information from the recent POES satellite pass through
shows seas around 7 feet, while a Sofar floating buoy to the south
and east of Manu`a shows seas around 8 feet. A southerly swell is
expected to move through the region today and will continue
through midweek. Even though wind driven waves will decrease as
wind strength remains up to 15 knots, the northerly winds combined
with the incoming southerly swell will create adverse conditions
for the American Samoa coastal waters through the middle of the
week.
