Fire Weather Planning Forecast for West Texas/Southeast New Mexico
National Weather Service Midland/Odessa TX
321 AM CDT Thu May 9 2024

.DISCUSSION...

Near critical and/or localized critical fire weather conditions are
possible this afternoon, mainly across the higher elevations of SE
NM/SW TX. RHs today will be below 15% this afternoon for all but the
NE Permian Basin, but lighter winds than previous days preclude more
significant fire weather concerns. IA potential remains high given
ERCs above the 80th percentile across the west and dry to critically
dry fuels, thus have handled today`s concerns with an RFD, mainly for
the higher terrain from the Guadalupe Mtns south to the Big Bend,
where stronger westerly 20ft are possible. A cold front this evening
and tonight mitigates concerns through Sat, with cooler temps and
increased rain chances, especially late Fri/Sat. Fire weather concerns
may return Sun as a warming and drying trend begins.
