Flood Warning
National Weather Service Burlington VT
1144 PM EST TUE FEB 20 2018

Clinton NY-Essex NY-
1144 PM EST TUE FEB 20 2018

The National Weather Service in Burlington has issued a

* Flood Warning for...
An Ice Jam Accompanied By Rain And Snowmelt in...
South central Clinton County in northern New York...
North central Essex County in northern New York...

* Until 545 AM EST Wednesday

* At 1141 PM EST, the gage on the East Branch of the Ausable River
at Au Sable Forks, NY showed sharp rises due to significant ice
movement. Web cam images at the gage site also confirmed sharp
rises, suggesting possible imminent formation of an ice jam in the
vicnity of Au Sable Forks downstream to Clintonville where older
ice from the thaw in January is present.

* Ice jams are very unpredictable and can break up, move and jam
again very quickly. Water backing up behind the jam is the main
flood threat, and can flood areas under deep water with
surprising speed. Favored ice jam locations are where a river
bends or slows, at bridge abutments, or near islands, sand bars,
and other obstructions to river flow.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Au Sable Forks, Keeseville, Jay In Essex County, Upper Jay, North
Jay, Clintonville, Ausable Forks and Harkness.

River levels may flucuate rapidly due to ice with little or no
warning. Residents in low lying flood prone areas should remain alert
for possible flooding due to ice jams. Ice jam flooding can be very
localized and not affect all locations along the river as in a
typical river flood.
