...Severe Weather Awareness Week Begins Today...

...Are You Severe Weather Ready...

April 30 to May 6 is Severe Weather Awareness Week in New
York...Connecticut...Massachusetts and Vermont. Everyone is urged to
be weather ready by protecting themselves from the hazards of
flooding...tornadoes...and severe thunderstorms.

Nationally...on average...severe weather kills 279 people per
year...including 110 from tornadoes...82 from flooding...56 from
wind and 31 from lightning. Severe weather happens locally. The
National Weather Service Forecast Office in Albany New York
issues 131 severe thunderstorm warnings...4 tornado
warnings...and 30 flash flood warnings per year.

Each day this week we will explore actions to take to reduce the
risk of death...injury and property loss from severe weather.

Monday we review severe weather terms and definitions.

Tuesday the focus is on severe thunderstorms.

Wednesday we turn to severe weather preparedness and safety.

Thursday will feature a study of tornadoes with a review of
thunderstorm safety. On Thursday afternoon at 115 pm we will
conduct our severe weather communication drill.

Friday is the day to look at the summer flood threat and provide
some safety rules.

Finally...on Saturday we will review the key items from this week
focusing on preparedness and safety.

Taking steps now to prepare for severe weather will help you keep
safe and enjoy summer. Be smart. Take part. Prepare.
