...Preliminary Summary of the Meteorological Summer of 2017...

The meteorological summer of 2017 began very warm and dry. But
shortly after Independence Day, the pattern flipped to much wetter
than normal. Temperatures responded by falling to below normal
levels by August.

Below are some highlights from this past summer (June 1-August 31).

Climate records for the Washington DC area have been kept at Ronald
Reagan Washington National Airport since August of 1941. Additional
temperature records observed downtown extend back to January of 1872.
Precipitation records extend back to January of 1871. Snowfall records
began in 1884.

Climate records for the Baltimore MD area have been kept at Baltimore-
Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport since 1950.
Additional temperature records observed downtown extend back to
July of 1872. Precipitation records extend back to January of
1871. Snowfall records began in March of 1892.

Temperature and precipitation records at Washington Dulles
International Airport began in 1960. Snowfall records began in 1962.

All climate data are considered preliminary until reviewed by the
National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI).
