PLEASE JOIN THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECAST OFFICE IN UPTON NEW YORK IN OBSERVING NATIONAL HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS WEEK. TODAYS TOPIC COVERS THE FORECAST PROCESS. PART OF THE MISSION OF THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICES NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER IS TO SAVE LIVES AND PROTECT PROPERTY BY ISSUING OUTLOOKS...WATCHES...WARNINGS...FORECASTS AND ANALYSES OF HAZARDOUS WEATHER CONDITIONS IN THE TROPICS. TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOKS ARE ISSUED FOUR TIMES A DAY DURING HURRICANE SEASON. THEY DESCRIBE THE STATE OF THE TROPICS...DISCUSSING AREAS OF DISTURBED WEATHER AND THEIR POTENTIAL FOR DEVELOPMENT OVER THE NEXT 5 DAYS. TROPICAL CYCLONE PUBLIC ADVISORIES DESCRIBE TROPICAL STORMS AND HURRICANES AND THEIR EXPECTED HAZARDS. THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER USUALLY ISSUES THEM EVERY SIX HOURS. HOWEVER...THEY ARE ISSUED MORE FREQUENTLY WHEN WATCHES OR WARNINGS ARE IN EFFECT OR WHEN THERE ARE SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN WARNINGS OR IN THE TROPICAL CYCLONE. THE ADVISORIES ARE BROADCAST OVER NOAA ALL HAZARDS WEATHER RADIO. HURRICANE LOCAL STATEMENTS ARE ISSUED BY YOUR LOCAL NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE WHEN A TROPICAL STORM OR HURRICANE WATCH OR WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR ANY PART OF THE LOCAL AREA BY THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER. THEY CONTAIN DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT PRESENT AND ANTICIPATED STORM IMPACTS. KNOW IF YOU ARE IN AN EVACUATION ZONE AND BE PREPARED TO EVACUATE. A TROPICAL STORM WATCH IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WINDS OF 39 TO 73 MPH ARE POSSIBLE WITHIN 48 HOURS. A HURRICANE WATCH IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WINDS OF AT LEAST 74 MPH ARE POSSIBLE WITHIN THE SPECIFIED COASTAL AREA. BECAUSE HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS ACTIVITIES BECOME DIFFICULT ONCE WINDS REACH TROPICAL STORM FORCE...THE HURRICANE WATCH IS ISSUED 48 HOURS IN ADVANCE OF THE ANTICIPATED ONSET OF TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS. THIS IS THE TIME TO TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT YOUR FAMILY AND PROPERTY AND EVACUATE IF DIRECTED TO BY LOCAL OFFICIALS. A TROPICAL STORM WARNING IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WINDS OF 39 TO 73 MPH ARE EXPECTED WITHIN 36 HOURS. A HURRICANE WARNING IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WINDS OF AT LEAST 74 MPH ARE EXPECTED WITHIN THE SPECIFIED COASTAL AREA.
