SUBJECT: CHANGE IN FLOOD STAGES ALONG THE BIG BLUE RIVER

FLOOD STAGES ARE BEING MODIFIED AT THREE LOCATIONS ALONG THE BIG
BLUE RIVER IN EASTERN NEBRASKA. THESE CHANGES ARE BEING MADE TO
BETTER REFLECT WHEN FLOODING OCCURS AND WHEN THE FLOODING THREAT
INCREASES. SEE EACH DESCRIPTION BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION.

*BIG BLUE RIVER AT SURPRISE*

PREVIOUS ACTION STAGE: 5.0 FT NEW ACTION STAGE: 6.0 FT
PREVIOUS FLOOD STAGE: 7.0 FT NEW FLOOD STAGE: (NO CHANGE)
PREVIOUS MODERATE STAGE: 11.0 FT NEW MODERATE STAGE: 10.0 FT
PREVIOUS MAJOR STAGE: 16.0 FT NEW MAJOR STAGE: 12.0 FT

FLOODING CONDITIONS ARE MORE SEVERE THAN ADVERTISED BY THE EXISTING
MODERATE AND MAJOR STAGES. AT 10 FEET A BRIDGE ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF
TOWN BEGINS TO CREATE BACKWATER EFFECTS AND CLOSE OFF A MAIN ROAD
THROUGH SURPRISE. AT 12 FEET THERE WILL LIKELY BE HOMES FLOODED IN
TOWN. MINOR FLOOD STAGE IS NOT CHANGING AND REMAINS REPRESENTATIVE
FOR WHEN MINOR FLOODING BEGINS.

*BIG BLUE RIVER AT CRETE*

PREVIOUS ACTION STAGE: 16.0 FT NEW ACTION STAGE: 19.0 FT
PREVIOUS FLOOD STAGE: 18.0 FT NEW FLOOD STAGE: 21.0 FT
PREVIOUS MODERATE STAGE: 24.0 FT NEW MODERATE STAGE: 25.0 FT
PREVIOUS MAJOR STAGE: 29.0 FT NEW MAJOR STAGE: 29.0 FT

RECENT HIGH WATER EVENTS HAVE SHOWN THAT THE EXISTING FLOOD STAGE OF
18 FEET IS TOO LOW. LOCAL OFFICIALS AGREE AND HAVE SAID TRUE
FLOODING IMPACTS DO NOT BEGIN UNTIL A STAGE OF 21 FEET WHEN A FEW
COUNTY ROADS 5 MILES NORTH OF CRETE BEGIN TO FLOOD.

*BIG BLUE RIVER AT BEATRICE*

PREVIOUS ACTION STAGE: 14.0 FT NEW ACTION STAGE: 16.0 FT
PREVIOUS FLOOD STAGE: 16.0 FT NEW FLOOD STAGE: 18.0 FT
PREVIOUS MODERATE STAGE: 26.0 FT NEW MODERATE STAGE: (NO CHANGE)
PREVIOUS MAJOR STAGE: 32.0 FT NEW MAJOR STAGE: (NO CHANGE)

RECENT HIGH WATER EVENTS HAVE SHOWN THE FLOOD STAGE OF 16 FEET IS
TOO LOW. LOCAL OFFICIALS AGREE AND HAVE RECOMMENDED A FLOOD STAGE OF
18 FEET TO BETTER REFLECT WHEN FLOODING BECOMES A THREAT TO LIFE AND
PROPERTY.

THESE CHANGES WILL BECOME EFFECTIVE ON DECEMBER 29TH. IF YOU HAVE
ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS CHANGE, PLEASE CONTACT THE NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE BEFORE THIS DATE USING THE INFORMATION BELOW.
