...SAFETY RULES FOR DANGEROUS HEAT ACROSS OUR REGION...

A HEAT ADVISORY COVERS ALL OF THE QUAD STATE REGION THROUGH
TUESDAY EVENING...WITH AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING FOR SOUTHEAST
MISSOURI...GENERALLY ALONG AND WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER.

HERE ARE SOME INFORMATION AND TIPS TO DEAL WITH THE HEAT.

HEAT IS THE NUMBER ONE WEATHER RELATED KILLER IN THE UNITED
STATES, CLAIMING SOME 350 LIVES EACH YEAR.  TO ENSURE THAT YOU AND
YOUR LOVED ONES ARE NOT A VICTIM OF THE DEADLY HEAT, HERE ARE SOME
HEAT SAFETY TIPS FOR YOU TO FOLLOW.

REMAIN IN AIR CONDITIONED PLACES AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

ELIMINATE, REDUCE, OR RESCHEDULE ALL OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES TO THE
COOLEST TIME OF THE DAY.  THE HOURS OF 11 AM TO 7 PM USUALLY YIELD
THE HIGHEST HEAT INDEX VALUES.  HOWEVER, THE INTENSITY OF THE SUN,
EVEN IN THE MORNING, SHOULD BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION. FULL
SUNSHINE CAN INCREASE HEAT INDEX VALUES BY UP TO 15 DEGREES. IF
YOU MUST BE OUTDOORS, TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS IN THE SHADE. DRESS FOR
THE HEAT BY WEARING LIGHTWEIGHT, LIGHT COLORED CLOTHING.

WEAR A HIGH S P F SUN SCREEN AND WEAR A HAT TO PROTECT YOUR FACE
AND HEAD.

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER OR NON-ALCOHOLIC SPORT DRINKS, EVEN IF YOU
DO NOT FEEL THIRSTY.

EAT FREQUENT, BUT SMALL, LOWER PROTEIN MEALS, SUCH AS FRUITS,
VEGETABLES, AND SALADS.

FREQUENTLY CHECK ON THE ELDERLY, THE VERY YOUNG, AND THOSE
INDIVIDUALS WITH CHRONIC HEALTH PROBLEMS, AS THEY ARE MORE
SUSCEPTIBLE TO THE DANGERS OF HEAT.

CONTACT YOUR LOCAL GOVERNMENT OR COMMUNITY AGENCY TO FIND AIR
CONDITIONED LOCATIONS TO STAY IN IF YOUR DO NOT HAVE IMMEDIATE
ACCESS TO AN AIR CONDITIONED PLACE DURING THE HOTTEST PART OF THE
DAY.

NEVER LEAVE PERSONS OR ANIMALS IN A CLOSED AREA EXPOSED TO THE
SUN, SUCH AS A VEHICLE.  TEMPERATURES IN THESE PLACES CAN BECOME
DEADLY IN A MATTER OF MINUTES.

IF LIVE STOCK OR PETS MUST REMAIN OUTDOORS, TRY TO MAKE SURE THAT
THEY ARE PROVIDED WITH PLENTY OF COOL WATER AND SHADE, WHENEVER
POSSIBLE.

REMEMBER THAT THE DANGERS OF HEAT ARE CUMULATIVE, SO IT IS
ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT THAT YOU FOLLOW THESE SAFETY RULES FOR
PROLONGED HEAT WAVES.

RECOGNIZE AND TREAT SYMPTOMS OF HEAT DISORDERS, SUCH AS HEAT
CRAMPS, HEAT EXHAUSTION, AND HEAT STROKE QUICKLY.  SEEK IMMEDIATE
MEDICAL ATTENTION OR CALL 9 1 1 , ESPECIALLY IF SYMPTOMS OF HEAT
EXHAUSTION OR HEAT STROKE ARE OBSERVED.  THESE INCLUDE, BUT ARE
NOT LIMITED TO VOMITING, DIZZINESS AND EXHAUSTION, MENTAL
CONFUSION, HEADACHE, RAPID WEAK PULSE OR BREATHING, DRY RED SKIN
AND HIGH BODY TEMPERATURE.  HEAT INDEX VALUES AROUND 105 DEGREES
OR HIGHER MAKE HEAT CRAMPS OR HEAT EXHAUSTION LIKELY, AND HEAT
STROKE POSSIBLE WITH PROLONGED EXPOSURE AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY.
