REGIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PADUCAH KY
323 PM CST Thu Dec 5 2013
A major winter storm was bearing down on the quad state area of
southwest Missouri, southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, and west
Kentucky. As a result, winter storm warnings have been posted for
the majority of the region into Friday evening. Cold air worked its
way steadily through the Quad State area Thursday afternoon. A
massive area of precipitation in the form of freezing rain and sleet
hovered in the northwest portion of the area. The wintry mix of
precipitation was further developing and spreading from northwest to
southeast from out of southeast Missouri and southern Illinois into
southern Indiana and west Kentucky as the evening approached.
Widespread reports of significant accumulations of sleet and
freezing rain had been reported from spotters across the area during
afternoon hours. Sleet was covering the ground in many locations
over southeast Missouri and southern Illinois up to an inch or more.
Cars were being reported as ice covered and travel was deteriorating
rapidly from the north and west.
By late afternoon the freezing line had reached as far south into
the area as the Ohio River and continued a south movement around 5
miles an hour. Indications are that the advancement of the freezing
line southward through the area will speed up slightly as night
falls. The freezing line will clear the most eastern sections of the
Pennyrile by midnight to 3am Friday.
Sleet and freezing rain will slowly transition to snow in northern
sections tonight while freezing rain and sleet develop deeper into
the southern sections. It is important to understand that
significant accumulations of freezing rain, sleet and snow are
expected with this storm. This is in fact a major winter storm for
the quad state area. Significant impacts are expected including
treacherous, dangerous travel, possible downed power lines, trees,
and large tree branches, some of which could attribute to power
outages and block roadways.
At the present time, this winter storm presents the possibility of
being the third worse ice storm to hit the area in the past decade.
Residents in the quad state area are encouraged to be prepared and
exercise extreme caution for the storm`s duration.
Once this storm clears the area late Friday, look for another winter
mixture to strike the area late Saturday night into Sunday with
further challenging impacts anticipated.
