Emergency Management in Nassau County and the Incident
Meteorologist reported smoke and ash across portions of Nassau
and Charlton Counties this morning due to the West Mims Wildfire
in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. Smoke and ash was
reported at Folkston, St. George, and Hilliard. Everyone should
limit prolonged outdoor exertion until the smoke clears. The smoke
is likely to begin mixing out after 11 am this morning. Children,
pregnant women, the elderly, and those that have heart or lung
disease are especially vulnerable to smoke exposure. Fine
particles are respiratory irritants, and exposures to high
concentrations can cause persistent cough, phlegm, wheezing, and
difficulty breathing.
