Temperatures range widely across the state this morning, falling into the mid 40s in northwest Iowa but only the mid 60s southeast. Despite the clear skies much of the night, cloud cover has begun to creep into far western Iowa, signifying the end of our tranquil weather and the beginning of a more active pattern. Some showers and thunderstorms may accompany the approaching cloud cover this morning, mainly impacting the western half of the state. These will lose steam as they track further east, but additional storms are expected to pass through the area through this afternoon and evening. A few of the storms later today may be strong to severe, especially over southern Iowa. Strong winds and hail will be the primary concerns, but a tornado cant be ruled out. Locally heavy rainfall will also be possible with any storms. Otherwise, in contrast with the last few days, expect increasing clouds and slightly cooler temperatures today. Tonight and beyond: Showers and thunderstorms tonight may linger into the morning hours Monday, before weakening and departing east. There will be a brief break from precipitation through mid-day, but additional thunderstorm development is expected in the afternoon and evening hours. Again, a few storms Monday may be strong to severe, especially over southwest Iowa. This stretch of active weather then caps off with a larger system on Tuesday, bringing the greatest severe risk of the current period. All severe hazards will be possible on Tuesday. Be sure to check the latest forecast information as more details are provided through the coming days. $$ Dodson
