MARCH 2017 SAW THE TYPICAL ROLLER COASTER WEATHER THAT CAN BE
EXPECTED DURING THE TRANSITION FROM WINTER TO SPRING. TEMPERATURES
ENDED UP RATHER CLOSE TO AVERAGE WITH SOME FAIRLY COLD AND FAIRLY
WARM PERIODS. THE MONTH WAS MUCH MORE WET THAN USUAL... HOWEVER
SNOWFALL WAS LESS THAN NORMAL.

THERE WAS A COLD PERIOD FROM THE 10TH TO THE 17TH OF THE MONTH...
DURING WHICH THE TEMPERATURE AT GRAND RAPIDS FAILED TO CLIMB ABOVE
32 DEGREES FOR SIX DAYS IN A ROW. THIS IS QUITE UNUSUAL BY MARCH
STANDARDS. ON THE FLIP SIDE... THERE WERE MANY DAYS WITH
TEMPERATURES WILL INTO THE 50S SCATTERED THROUGHOUT THE MONTH. THE
WARMEST TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH OCCURRED ON THE 24TH... WHEN MANY
LOCATIONS SAW HIGHS IN THE 70S.

THE WEATHER PATTERN WAS QUITE UNSETTLED AND PRECIPITATION OCCURRED
FREQUENTLY. THE GREATEST RAIN TOTALS FELL ACROSS SOUTHERN
MICHIGAN... WHERE TOTALS FOR THE MONTH SURPASSED 2 INCHES ABOVE
AVERAGE IN SOME SPOTS. ONLY A LITTLE OVER A HANDFUL OF DAYS SAW NO
PRECIPITATION AT ALL. THE FINAL WEEK OF THE MONTH PRODUCED THE MOST
RAINFALL. ACCUMULATING SNOW ONLY FELL ON A FEW OCCASIONS IN THE
EARLY TO MIDDLE PART OF THE MONTH.

THE BIGGEST WEATHER EVENT OF MARCH 2017 WAS A CLEAR SKY WIND STORM
ON MARCH 8. A WELL DEVELOPED LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM TO THE NORTH AND
HIGH PRESSURE TO THE SOUTH CREATED VERY STRONG PRESSURE GRADIENT
WINDS JUST ABOVE THE SURFACE. SURFACE HEATING FROM SUNSHINE IN A DRY
ZONE BEHIND A COLD FRONT HELPED MIX STRONG WINDS DOWN TO THE SURFACE
FROM MID MORNING TO LATE AFTERNOON. WIND GUSTS WERE RECORDED AS HIGH
AS 64 MPH AT THE AIRPORTS IN GRAND RAPIDS AND LANSING... AND EVEN
GREATER IN SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN. HOURS OF WIND GUSTS OVER 50 AND
OCCASIONALLY 60 MPH WERE FELT IN ALL AREAS NOT WITHIN 20 MILES OF
LAKE MICHIGAN. THIS CAUSED HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF POWER OUTAGES
ACROSS THE STATE. IT WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST POWER LOSSES IN LOWER
MICHIGAN HISTORY... AFFECTING ABOUT ONE THIRD OF CUSTOMERS. THESE
WERE PERHAPS THE STRONGEST NON-THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS RECORDED
DURING MARCH IN THE PAST FEW DECADES OF REGULAR WEATHER
OBSERVATIONS.
