Sea Ice Forecast for Western and Arctic Alaskan Coastal Waters

ANALYSIS CONFIDENCE...High to moderate.

SYNOPSIS...High pressure will remain over the High Arctic through
Saturday. A weak low pressure will form in the western Chukchi Sea
on Friday, moving toward the Beaufort Sea over the weekend.

The main ice edge extends from near Wales to 34 2`N 169 15`W to 64
8`N 170 21`W to 64 37`N 171 12`W to 64 11`N 171 56`W and into
Russian waters. Brash ice remains near the southern side of St.
Lawrence. The ice edge is open water.

From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge extends from
near Wales to 95 nm S of Wales to 20 nm N of Savoonga to 64 nm N of
Gambell and westward into Russian waters. Brash ice remains near
the southern side of St. Lawrence. The ice edge is open water.

FORECAST FOR THE BEAUFORT SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. East winds will persist through Friday, then a
period of southerlies are possible. The ice pack will continue to be
consolidated and move west until the Saturday then shorefast ice may
break off with the southerly winds. Near-shore ice will continue to
degrade.

FORECAST FOR THE CHUKCHI SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...The large polynya
on the northwest coast will continue to expand to the west through
Thursday before moving north through the weekend as winds shift
southerly. Southerly winds will loosen up the pack ice around the
Wales to Shishmaref coastline.

FORECAST FOR THE BERING SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Ice south of the
Strait and near St. Lawrence Island will continue to melt and move
with currents and tides. Some areas of marginal ice coverage will
likely remain near Russia and St. Lawrence through Monday.
