VFR through the TAF period. Drainage winds are expected to turn
more to the southeast later this morning into the afternoon as a
Denver Cyclone develops. As the cyclone forms and drifts
northeastward, the terminals may see a brief shift to a
northwesterly wind later this afternoon. Still not great
confidence in the timing of any wind shift or the predominant
direction the winds will turn to, but previous TAF captured the
general thinking. Drainage winds are expected again tonight.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Gradual increase in VFR cloud cover ahead of
approaching system. Additionally, will see southerly winds increase
after sunrise, becoming gusty by mid morning on into the afternoon
hours. Some guidance sources suggest potential for periods of
westerly crosswinds mid afternoon Wednesday, which will be something
to keep an eye on. Otherwise, should see a somewhat dry cold frontal
passage (shower chances ~20-30%) ~03-05Z early Thursday, with a
period of gusty NW winds following frontal passage. Slightly lighter
NW winds then favored to persist on through Thursday morning.
.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...At southern terminals, TAF
period features clear to mostly clear skies, and largely diurnally
normal winds with some modestly gusty conditions expected through
the day Wednesday. At northern terminals, an approaching system will
result in a gradual increase in VFR cloud cover through the period.
Most terminals will see a favored south to west component to wind
directions through the day, with many locations seeing gusts during
the day in the 20kt to 35kt range or so (higher chances at more
exposed and typically gusty terminals). By late Wednesday evening, a
cold front will drop southward resulting in a flip to north-
northwesterly winds, including a period of gusty conditions
following the front. Widespread precipitation not expected, but
scattered showers likely to accompany the front, with highest
chances from N UT into SW WY.

West of the Divide...KBPI/KJAC/KPNA/KRKS Terminals
Prevailing VFR conditions will continue this morning, as high
clouds stream over the area from the west. Rain showers will
move into western Wyoming by midday, but will be mostly confined
over the mountains. This will also impact KJAC, but conditions
will predominantly remain VFR even as showers pass through.
Steadier rain is expected at KJAC Wednesday evening after 01Z,
so reductions in vis to MVFR are possible (40%). Isolated
thunderstorms will develop Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday
evening, mainly in the mountains around KJAC. Not enough
confidence in thunderstorm coverage for VCTS at KJAC at this
time.
Other terminals will remain dry, although there is a 20-30% chance
of rain at KBPI/KPNA Wednesday evening. Wind will increase at all
terminals late Wednesday morning from the southwest, with gusts of
20-30 knots at all terminals through the afternoon hours. A wind
shift from the northwest will occur late Wednesday evening.
Mountaintop obscuration will begin late this morning as clouds
continue to increase and continue through the TAF period.
East of the Divide...KCOD/KCPR/KLND/KRIW/KWRL Terminals
Prevailing VFR conditions will persist over the next 24 hours,
but wind will increase for all terminals late this morning as
another storm system approaches the state. Wind will be
southwesterly sustained in the teens, gusting 20-30 knots from
14/16Z through the afternoon, gradually decreasing between
00Z/02Z. A shift to northwesterly wind is likely (70%)
this evening for KWRL/KRIW/KLND.
Rain will spread over northern portions of the Bighorn Basin
after 06Z. Snow is not expected at this time, but the rain could
change over to snow if the cold air arrives faster than
expected.

A dry backdoor cold front currently across the central highlands
and through KROW will move through KSAF and KABQ around 14Z.
North to northeast winds on the leading edge of the backdoor front
across eastern NM will be breezy with gusts of up to 30 kts
possible. The east wind at KABQ from the backdoor front could
produce gusts of up to 25 kts through around 16Z. Westerly flow
aloft mixing down to the surface will wash out the backdoor front
first across central areas late morning followed by the eastern
highlands midday and the eastern plains come the mid to late
afternoon. West to southwest winds in the afternoon will be breezy
across west central areas including KGUP and the northeast
highlands including KLVS with gusts of up to 30 kts possible.
Winds across these areas drop off shortly after sunset. The
dryline across West Texas backs up to far eastern NM eastern
Thursday morning. This added surface moisture could produce some
low clouds on the caprock including KCVN and KCVS around 23/09Z.
Low clouds look to stay south of KTCC.
