SUBJECT: NEW FORECAST SERVICES FOR THE KNIFE RIVER NEAR TWO
HARBORS

EFFECTIVE July 9, 2024 the National Weather Service Forecast
Office, in Duluth in cooperation with the North Central River
Forecast Center, is introducing a new river flood forecast point
on the Knife River in Minnesota.

The forecast point will be for an existing river gauge on the
Knife River and is part of NWS Duluths hydrologic services for
the Western Lake Superior basin. Public stakeholders as well as
County, State, Federal partners have expressed interest in
expanded services in the basin.

NWSDLH Hydrologic Services will begin July 9, 2024 for the point
listed below. Flood forecast services may begin sooner if
conditions warrant.

Knife River near Two Harbors, MN (NWSLI KNIM5)

- Flood Warning (MSPFLWDLH)
- Flood Statement (MSPFLSDLH)
- Flood Advisory (MSPFLSDLH)
- Flood Watch (MSPFFADLH)
- Hydrologic Statement (MSPRVSDLH)
- NWPS Probabilistic Outlook (MSPESFDLH)
- National and Local NWPS webpages

Forecast and warning information is available from the
NOAA/NWS Duluth web page at weather.gov/duluth as well as the
NOAA/NWS National Water Prediction Service (NWPS) web page
at water.noaa.gov.

The NWS defines Flood Stage as the river level at which impacts to
life and/or property begin.

On the Knife River the minor flood stage is 33.0 ft, moderate
flood stage 34.0 ft, and major flood stage is 36.0 ft. Forecasts
will be issued when projected stages reach an action stage of 30.0
ft. During recent flood events in September of 2023 the gauge
reached a level of 34.89 ft resulting in inundation of river-side
recreation trails and low lying areas of riverside residential
properties. During major flood stage (gauge height 36 feet or
greater), water goes over the Church Road (County Road 102)
bridge.

New forecast services will be available 7/9/2024 or sooner if
conditions are warranted at https://water.noaa.gov/gauges/KNIM5
