Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
336 AM CDT Tue Sep 17 2024

Today:

Dry conditions remained across most of the state early this morning,
outside of a line of weak showers and storms moving into far
northwest Iowa and southern Minnesota. Upper level clouds were
streaming across the western half of the state, with overnight
temperatures as of 3am in the mid 60s to low 70s. Winds were light
from the southeast across the region.

While dry weather is largely expected to continue for most areas
today, lingering weak shower and storm activity over portions of
western Iowa are possible throughout this morning. Otherwise, highs
in the mid to upper 80s are expected, with partly sunny skies. Winds
are expected to increase out of the south/southeast later this morning
through the afternoon, especially over northern Iowa, with gusts up
to 20-25 mph and isolated to 30 mph expected.

Tonight and beyond:

Dry conditions are expected tonight, with mostly clear skies,
decreasing winds and overnight lows falling into the 60s. The rest of
the week will see gradually increasing precipitation trends as
multiple waves move into the region. Showers and thunderstorms are
expected Wednesday, with a few strong storms possible over western
Iowa, before the coverage becomes more widespread Thursday with an
increased severe potential mainly over northern Iowa. On and off
showers and storms look to continue through the weekend, though will
see cooler temperatures return, especially Sunday with highs in the
70s.
