AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
325 PM PDT Mon Jun 10 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Dry and hot weather expected to continue into mid
week. Temperatures will then diminish toward the end of the week.
Stratus will cover coastal areas for the next several days with
clearing expected each afternoon. Locally strong northerly winds
expected over the exposed coastal mountains and headlands.

&&

.DISCUSSION...Quiet weather conditions with warming interior
temperatures today as high pressure build into the Great Basin.
Stratus has eroded back to the coast with the daytime heating,
although stratus near-coastal locations are expected to persist
with the sea breeze. Inland temperatures has been running up to 10
degrees warmer compared to yesterday`s reading.

Temperatures will warm up few more degree on Tuesday,
specifically for interior Mendocino, eastern Trinity and Lake
County. Moderate heat risk expected to continue across the
interior valleys, with localized major heat risk for the eastern
portion of Lake County. A heat advisory remain in effect for
southern Lake on Tuesday where high temperatures are projected to
peak around 98-103F. Those without effective cooling and/or
adequate hydration will be at the greatest risk. For the rest of
the interior valleys, highs are forecast to range from 90 to 100F.
It will remain hot with low humidities on Wednesday for eastern
Trinity, interior Mendocino and Lake.

Additionally, a thermal trough is expected to develop near the coast
Wednesday. This will promote breezy north-northwesterly winds each
afternoon Wednesday and Thursday over the exposed ridges and
coastal headlands, with gusts from 25 to 35 mph at times...locally
higher gusts possible over the King Range.

NBM continues to indicate high temperatures generally trending
downward toward normal (83-87F) late in the week and over the
weekend as another 500mb trough approaches the Pacific NW.
Uncertainty with the magnitude and rate of "cooling" increases
this weekend. Probability for 90F or more is around 30-50% for
valleys of Lake, southern/eastern Mendocino and central/eastern
Trinity. At this point and based on the NBM, rain from this
trough is highly improbable. NBM probabilities for 0.10in or more
in 24 hours are no more than 10% for Del Norte county by late in
the weekend or 5 PM Sunday. /ZVS&DB

.AVIATION...A "marginally" deep stratus marine layer (1500-1900
FT) returned to the North Coast. The result was coastal TAF sites
experiencing periods of restrictive IFR/LIFR conditions into
middle afternoon, especially at ACV. By then, the large swathe of
marine clouds became a narrow rope of clouds with plenty of local
breaks. Therefore, the rest of the afternoon/early evening will
see at least partial clearing before the stratus resettles along
the coast. A weak frontal boundary will move over the coast
Tuesday morning and may weaken the marine layer...which could
result in "higher" IFR-MVFR conditions in the morning; some
morning low clouds will stretch into local coastal river valleys,
but rapidly dissipate in the morning. Inland areas will remain
VFR. /TA

.MARINE...Northerly winds 15-25 knots continue in the outer waters,
near or just reaching gale gusts in the southern outer waters in a
narrow corridor downwind of Cape Mendocino. Wave heights are
diminishing below 10 feet outside of this expansion fan as
northerlies briefly subside alongside a decaying NW swell through
early Tuesday morning. Winds are forecast to quickly rebound Tuesday
afternoon into Wednesday, producing widespread gale winds and steep
and hazardous seas, especially in the outer waters. Responsive seas
approaching 12-15 feet are likely early Wednesday into Thursday
across all zones as gale gusts approaching 40 knots drive steep
northerly wind waves. Advisory level winds and elevated seas
expected to continue through the end of this week as a series of
long period westerly swells fill into the waters.
