Area Forecast Discussion

...New 06Z Aviation Discussion...

.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Friday)
Issued at 256 PM EDT Thu Jun 13 2024

Skies are partly to mostly sunny across the area today with early
afternoon temperatures ranging from the mid 70s in the highest
elevations of the NE to near 90 across the S third of the County
Warning Area. Some lingering mid-level vorticity along with slightly
cooler air aloft will generate a few showers across the NE mountains
this afternoon and again Friday afternoon, but the remainder of the
area should remain dry.

Lows tonight will drop to near 60 in the highest elevations with mid
to upper 60s elsewhere (perhaps closer to 70 in the Atlanta metro
heat island). High temperatures on Friday will range from the mid to
upper 80s in the northern mountains to the mid 90s elsewhere. Low
temperatures Friday night will range from the mid 60s in the NE
mountains to the lower 70s elsewhere.

.LONG TERM...
(Saturday morning through next Wednesday)
Issued at 256 PM EDT Thu Jun 13 2024

Starting Saturday, long wave trough will be exiting the NE CONUS,
dragging a stalling surface front slowly down towards the CWA. Our
dry airmass that is currently in place will still be in place across
the CWA, just now with several days worth of June sunshine beating
down into it and warming it up. Upper level ridging will also be
rapidly moving into the area Saturday and build fully over the area
on Sunday. Surface high pressure slides off the east coast, bringing
a more southerly fetch and moisture slowly returning to the area on
Sunday. Add it all up, and it`s gonna be a hot weekend. Current
forecast temps are well into the 90s and even approaching triple
digits in many areas on Saturday. Forecast temps are a few degrees
lower Sunday, but with the humidity, the overall heat index is
similar to Saturday. Both days have heat indices into the upper
90s and lower 100s. Forecast morning lows on Saturday and Sunday
start in the 70s in many locations, which should approach or break
record maximum low temperatures in some areas if it comes to
pass.

With moisture slowly returning to the area, some afternoon
thunderstorm chances will begin to pick up on Sunday despite dome of
high pressure starting to build overhead. This ridge looks to
potentially be in place through much of the rest of the long term.
Still, these thunderstorms should remain pretty isolated thanks to
aforementioned dome. Severe weather is not anticipated at this time,
though will never rule out a damaging wind gust from a strong
thunderstorm that collapses at the wrong time.
