In 1935, record flooding occurred on the Republican River in southwest Nebraska due to days of heavy rainfall. According to witness accounts, the roar of the water could be heard coming down the Republican Valley five miles away. The water rose 10 feet in 12 minutes in McCook. Water was twenty feet deep in some places and was bluff to bluff in areas where the bluffs are typically at least two miles apart. The town of Haigler was spared because it is situated on higher ground, but communities along the river from Parks to McCook were severely impacted if not outright destroyed. It is estimated that 113 people were killed in 3 states due to the flooding. In 2011, several rounds of severe thunderstorms moved across Norton county, Kansas during the late afternoon and early evening hours. Hail reports from half dollar size up to two inches in diameter were received from storm spotters. $$
