923 FXUS64 KHUN 110551 AFDHUN Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Huntsville AL 1251 AM CDT Tue Jun 11 2024 ...New AVIATION... .NEAR TERM... (Tonight) Issued at 902 PM CDT Mon Jun 10 2024 A cold front that moved southward across the area yesterday, now was located along the Gulf Coast. An area of high pressure with origins in Canada has moved SE-ward, and was centered over the western Great Lakes. It was bringing slightly cooler conditions to the Tennessee Valley. After high temperatures in the mid 80s, 9 PM readings have cooled to around 70 with light northerly winds. Normal highs this time of year are in the upper 80s. The region was under a NW flow aloft, thanks to rather deep troughing extending south and west from SE Canada, and upper ridging over the southern Great Plains. This NW flow bringing a few to scattered high altitude clouds, and the surface high headed to the region will bring somewhat cooler conditions as we move into the overnight. Lows by daybreak Tue should fall into the mid/upper 50s (sans average lows around 67 degrees this time of year). Standing record lows of 48/1913 Muscle Shoals and 52/1988 Huntsville should hold. The on-going forecast looks to be in good shape, with no big changes needed at this time. && .SHORT TERM... (Tuesday through Thursday) Issued at 206 PM CDT Mon Jun 10 2024 High pressure will continue to sink south and east on Tuesday in the wake of an upper level trough and associated cold front. This will keep dry northerly flow in place and will keep temperatures on the cooler side, with highs in the lower 80s and overnight lows dipping down to the mid to upper 50s. Be sure to enjoy the cooler temperatures while they last, because a pattern change is on the way! Strong upper ridging will build to our west, and will slowly drift east through the mid-week period. This will begin a warming trend on Wednesday, as afternoon highs reach the mid to upper 80s, then continue to climb through Thursday as upper level heights rise. Expect temps to reach the lower 90s across most of the area Thursday afternoon, and will be the first of several hot 90+ degree days forecasted into the weekend. Be sure to keep these warmer temperatures in mind when planning to spend time outdoors, and be sure to practice heat safety! && .LONG TERM... (Thursday night through Sunday) Issued at 204 AM CDT Mon Jun 10 2024 The aformentioned ridging will only intensify through the long term yielding subsequent days of temps above 90 degrees. While each day through the long term will see highs in the 90s, Saturday and Sunday look to be the hottest as center of the ridge pushes into the TN Valley. Temperatures will be in the mid 90s, however with the return of dewpoints in the 60s and 70s, heat index values over 100 are not out of the question. For those participating in outdoor activities through the weekend it will be vital to practice proper heat safety. Protect yourself from the sun via sunscreen or loose fitting light layers. Protect yourself from heat exhaustion by taking frequent breaks in AC or in shaded areas and staying hydrated throughout the weekend. && .AVIATION... (06Z TAFS) Issued at 1251 AM CDT Tue Jun 11 2024 VFR conditions will exist at the HSV/MSL terminals this TAF period, with a few high-level clouds expected at times and a few lower-level Cu possible during the peak of the diurnal warming cycle on Tuesday. A NNE flow arnd 5 kts will persist overnight (and reduce concern for nocturnal BR/FG development at the airports) before backing to NNW and increasing a bit by 16Z. Winds will become lgt/vrbl by 22Z. && .HUN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... AL...None. TN...None. && $$ NEAR TERM...RSB SHORT TERM...25 LONG TERM...RAD AVIATION...70/DD
