In 1899, a violent tornado that researchers believe was
an F4, struck extreme East Central Nebraska. Reaching
around 500 yards wide, the tornado tracked nine miles
along the northern edge of Washington County. It
destroyed about 90 percent of Herman, a village of about
500 people. Eleven were killed, 25 injured and around
300 were left homeless.
