It was a reminder of summer across Kansas this afternoon with
temperatures rising into the 90s. Greater moisture across southern
Kansas resulted in heat indices around the century mark. Showers
and thunderstorms developed in the southwest Kansas mid afternoon
which did bring a nice cool down to that corner of the state with
values dropping into the 70s. These storms did produce wind gusts
to around 60 mph. Southeast to south winds had speeds of 5 to 20
mph with the strongest speeds in the central portion of the state.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to move
northeast and east this evening. Strong to severe storms are
possible with the biggest threat being damaging wind gusts of 60
to 70 mph. Quarter sized hail cannot be ruled out either. There
are chances for showers and thunderstorms across all of the state
into Missouri besides the northwest corner of Kansas. Southeast
to south winds are anticipated for most of the Central Plains at 5
to 15 mph. Overnight low temperatures are forecast to fall to
around 50 degrees in western Nebraska and northeast Kansas to the
mid 70s for southern Kansas and Oklahoma.

As a low pressure system moves into the Plains, there will be a
stark contrast in temperatures on Saturday. In far western Kansas,
daytime highs will be in the mid 70s while south central and
southeast Kansas into Oklahoma may reach 100 degrees. Chances for
showers and thunderstorms exist for all but central and eastern
Oklahoma as well as western Nebraska. Winds will transition to the
north in the High Plains with the strongest speeds in Nebraska at
20 to 25 mph with gusts approaching 45 mph.
