487 NOUS42 KKEY 212124 PNSKEY FLZ076>078-212330- Public Information Statement National Weather Service Key West FL 524 PM EDT Tue May 21 2024 ...WET AND STORMY MONDAY FOR THE FLORIDA KEYS... Updated...The rainfall tables have been updated on the afternoon of May 21st to include CoCoRaHS and COOP observations that were submitted after the conclusion of this rainfall event. The paragraphs below are from the original Public Information Statement that was issued on the evening of May 20th, with minor adjustments regarding increased rainfall totals. ==================================================================== Training thunderstorms and heavy rainfall affected most of the the Florida Keys today. Higher rainfall totals were first focused on the Upper Keys before dawn, then the Middle Keys around and after dawn, then the Lower Keys from the late morning into the early afternoon. The highest totals were around 10 inches in the Middle Keys, more specifically over western portions of Vaca Key. In the Lower Keys, the highest reports were over the eastern islands, with the Saddlebunch Keys seeing around 8 inches of rain. Observations in the Upper Keys peaked around 6 inches on Lower Matecumbe. In the tables below, over 3 dozen sites recorded rainfall totals of 2 or more inches. Of particular note in these observations is the rainfall total at the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport. With 7.08 inches of rainfall today, it has shattered the daily record (previously 1.68 inches in 1991) and has become the wettest day recorded for the month of May in the Marathon Area. Todays total also marks the 5th wettest day observed in Marathon, since measurements began in May 1950. The tables below contain rainfall reports from across the Florida Keys, ending at the time indicated. It is important to note that CoCoRaHS and COOP observations are typically taken once per day, usually in the morning. The remainder of todays rainfall data for those sites will be reflected in observations tomorrow morning. Observations are collected from a variety of sources with varying equipment and exposures. We thank all volunteer weather observers for their dedication. Not all data listed are considered official.
