430 FNUS56 KLOX 162231 FWFLOX Fire Weather Planning Forecast For Southwestern California National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA 331 PM PDT Sun Jun 16 2024 ......RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 3 PM PDT MONDAY FOR GUSTY NORTHWEST TO NORTH WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR THE INTERSTATE 5 CORRIDOR AND VENTURA COUNTY MOUNTAINS... ...ELEVATED TO BRIEF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS THROUGH TUESDAY FOR REMAINING INTERIOR AREAS AND SOUTHERN SANTA BARBARA COUNTY DUE TO GUSTY WINDS WITH WARM AND DRY CONDITIONS... .DISCUSSION... Strong northwest to north winds will remain widespread across interior Southwest California through Monday evening, with the strongest wind surge expected tonight. The combination of a long duration of strong northwest to north winds and low relative humidity has resulted in a Red Flag Warning until 3 pm Monday for the I-5 corridor and the Ventura County mountains as conditions will remain favorable for large fire growth across the Post Fire complex. Wind gusts in this region are expected to be 40-55 mph this afternoon, increasing to 60-70 mph tonight, and 35-50 mph on Monday into Monday evening. By late Monday night into Tuesday morning, the wind is expected to shift to the northeast with gusts up to 35 mph near the Post Fire. Daytime humidity levels in this region are expected to fall to between 15-25 percent today and Monday, lowest in downslope flow favored areas. By Tuesday, humidity levels will potentially fall to less than 10 percent. As a result, there is a 40 percent chance of the Red Flag Warning being extended into Monday night and Tuesday. Elsewhere across the region, northwest wind gusts of 30 to 50 mph will be common at times through Monday evening across the interior and southwest Santa Barbara county. Isolated gusts to 60 mph will be likely in the strongest periods of wind across the western Santa Ynez Range and adjacent western Santa Barbara County South Coast, especially near Gaviota and Refugio in the evening and overnight hours in conjunction with Sundowner wind enhancements. Meanwhile, a warm and dry air mass will remain in place, with widespread 8 to 15 percent humidities across the interior today, and 12 to 20 percent on Monday. Poor overnight recoveries in the foothills are also expected. The warm and dry air will continue to descend into some coastal foothills today, including portions of southern Santa Barbara County. With the northeast winds gusting between 25 and 45 mph and very low humidities falling to between 5 and 10 percent on Tuesday, the elevated to brief critical fire weather conditions have been extended across the interior through Tuesday. There is an increased risk for fast-growing grass fires over much of the area, that could transition into wildfires where the fuel beds are most abundant and dry.
