.DISCUSSION...

KEY MESSAGES:

- Cooler, showery and breezy on Thursday, especially in northwest
   Montana

- Gradual warming and drying through the weekend

- Another weak disturbance Monday into Tuesday

A weak cold front moved through the Northern Rockies last night
which will cause temperatures to be around 10 degrees cooler
compared to yesterday. A secondary disturbance is expected to drop
out of British Columbia later today causing scattered showers and
thunderstorms along the Canadian border and along the Continental
Divide near Glacier NP. This disturbance will also cause gusty
westerly winds to develop across northwest and west central
Montana this afternoon as gusts up to 40 mph on the ridge
especially near the Divide.

The Northern Rockies appear to be under zonal (westerly) flow
Friday through the weekend. This flow pattern will bring gradual
warming and drying to the region. Temperatures are anticipated to
be 5 to 10 degrees above seasonal averages by Sunday afternoon.

Another weak disturbance is expected to drop out of western Canada
into the Northern Rockies during the first part of next week. The
consensus of the models indicating a cooling trend for the region.
While the extent of precipitation is uncertain at this time, the
majority of the models have light precipitation across northwest
Montana and a minority show more widespread precipitation for the
Northern Rockies.
