Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pocatello ID

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday night.

A series of weak shortwave will work through the area through the
short term. Atmosphere is too dry for much more than some high
cirrus with these systems. Winds are expected to remain light.
However, there is a 20 to 30 percent chance of some gusts over 20
mph Sunday night as the strongest of these systems moves through our
area. Overnight lows tonight will once again be in the upper 30s to
low 40s for the valleys with highs on Sunday just a touch warmer in
the low 70s for the valleys. Lows Sunday night for the valleys
expected to be in the low to mid 40s as the weak system pushes
through the area and winds keep the lower atmosphere stirred up
somewhat.

.LONG TERM...Monday through Next Friday.

After a pretty quiet weekend, it looks like we`ll continue to see
fairly quiet weather in the week ahead, too. On Monday, a weak
trough will be passing through, but it won`t bring much to the area
aside from a minor drop in afternoon highs (to the upper 60s and low
70s) , increasing cloud cover, and about a 10 percent chance for a
few showers up near the Island Park/Driggs areas. After this trough
passes through, high pressure builds back in through midweek with
highs warming into the mid 70s on Tuesday and upper 70s to even low
80s on Wednesday which looks to be the warmest day of the week. The
second half of the week will be more the beginning in that a few
systems will move through farther to our north and we just get a
glancing blow of weak troughing to impact us on Thursday and Friday
to drop our highs by a couple of degrees each day an push wind gusts
into the 20 to 25 mph range, but overall little to no precipitation
is expected. There will be a 10 to 20 percent chance for areas
farther north as the trough swings through next Saturday, but most
will remain dry through the week ahead.

.AVIATION...Besides some high cirrus over the region, conditions
will remain vfr over the next day or so and winds look mainly light.
Expect upvalley winds to continue at SUN until around 03z and then
become downvalley overnight.

.FIRE WEATHER...An area of low pressure well to our south will
continue moving eastward through the weekend, allowing weak high
pressure to build in over the area for the rest of today and most of
Sunday. This will bring continued warm temperatures as highs
increase by a couple of degrees for Sunday and no precipitation is
expected. Late Sunday into Monday, a weak trough passes through and
will cool us down a couple of degrees again, increase cloud cover,
and bring only a 10 percent chance of a shower up in the Island
Park/Driggs area on Monday. After that trough moves through, high
pressure builds in again and high warm back up to the mid and upper
70s for the rest of the week. Even as we warm, minimum relative
humidities only fall to about 20 percent at their lowest during the
week and wind gusts will generally stay in the 10 to 20 mph range.
Overall, not seeing any near-critical or critical fire weather
conditions for much of the week ahead.
