Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
216 PM SST Tue Sep 24 2024

.Short term...
A trough just south of the Islands will continue to hold numerous
showers and a slight chance for Thunderstorms in the area through
Wednesday night. However, latest GDI trends (instability
indicator) shows higher values on Thursday. This information suggests
the trough will be most active Thursday, with a potential for
flooding.

.Long term...
Meanwhile a high pressure system passing south of the territory
will elevate winds by Friday. This system will bring breezy, east
winds for the remainder of the forecast period, while pushing the
aforementioned trough further north. Expect scattered showers and
east winds of 15 to 25 mph to remain through the new week.

.Marine...
Latest observations from the PacIOOS buoys show wave heights
around 5 to 7 feet while peak periods are around 18 seconds. These
long periods suggests a large south swell passing through the
area. Hence, a high surf advisory is in effect as large surfs and
strong rip currents are possible with these swells.

Model data depicts the swells briefly subsiding Wednesday before
another round of swells moves in from the South on Thursday.
Hence, the high surf advisory will likely hold through the end of
the week. Furthermore, wave heights will gradually build Thursday
and peak Friday with upcoming winds.
