948 FXUS65 KREV 231914 AFDREV Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Reno NV 1214 PM PDT Mon Sep 23 2024 .SYNOPSIS... * A dry and mild pattern with weak RH recoveries on mid-slopes and ridgetops across W.Nevada this week. * Increased southwest winds expected on Wednesday and Saturday ahead of a couple of dry frontal passages this week. * Cool nights with afternoon highs generally ranging 4-8 degrees above season averages expected into the start of the weekend. && .DISCUSSION... A warm and dry pattern will prevail this week as high pressure settles across the region. This will yield seasonably warm temperatures with highs ranging around 4-8 degrees above average. Generally looking at highs in the mid/upper 80s this week across W.Nevada upper 70s to near 80 for Sierra valleys. While light winds will prevail for most of the week, there will be two breezy periods on Wednesday and then late weekend as a series of dry frontal boundaries track through the region. Expect winds on Wednesday to produce gusts of 20-30 mph with localized higher gusts in wind prone areas and for northern areas near the Oregon border. This combined with afternoon RH of 15-20% could lead to isolated areas of critical fire weather conditions, particularly across portions of far NE Lassen, E.Modoc, and far N.Washoe counties where winds and dry conditions will be best aligned. Cooling of 3-4 degrees is expected in the wake of the front on Thursday with lighter breezes prevailing. Temperatures will warm back into the upper 80s on Friday across western Nevada before the next frontal boundary produces another round of breezy southwest winds on Saturday with gusts of 25-35 mph in the afternoon. This could produce another period of localized critical fire weather conditions along with choppy waters on area lakes. Overall, cooler and near seasonable weather will be in place behind the front on Sunday with dry conditions and fair to poor overnight humidity recoveries continuing across western Nevada mid-slopes and ridgetops. Fuentes && .AVIATION... VFR conditions will prevail through Tuesday. Increasing southwest winds with afternoon gusts of 20-25kts may yield areas of turbulence along and east of the Sierra as a dry frontal passage tracks through the region.
