Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
216 AM PDT Thu Jun 27 2024

.SYNOPSIS...

* Another round of increased breezes today with dry air in place
could bring more fire weather concerns and choppy lakes. Breezes
relax for Friday but return for the weekend.

* For next week including the July 4th holiday, above average
temperatures are likely with typical afternoon breezes and very
  low chances for thunderstorms.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

* Infrared satellite returns this morning reveal the monsoonal
moisture has moved eastward over the Great Basin. This progression
will continue, while another trough drops over the Pacific
Northwest bringing gusty west-northwest winds and slightly cooler
  and less humid air.

* The ridge builds in for Friday, giving us a break in the breezy
action until another trough drops in for the weekend. We will see
breezes increasing for Saturday and Sunday, with gusts to 30 mph
  possible.

* Once we see the dry weekend trough exit, the work week will
bring high pressure, along with warming temperatures. Depending
on the strength and positioning of the ridge, we may see triple
digit heat build in for midweek into the weekend. The July 4th
timeframe in NBM blended guidance leans toward the century mark
with a 25-40% chance for 100+ degrees in western Nevada
valleys. Glancing into the second week of July, signals point to
conditions remaining dry and hot. HRICH

.AVIATION...

* Winds this morning will become northwesterly, with gusts 20-25
kt this afternoon for western Nevada valleys. Otherwise, VFR
conditions will prevail through the end of June. HRICH

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...

* W-NW gusts of 20-30 mph will be present this afternoon, mainly
for western Nevada valleys. For the Sierra ridges, gusts of up
to 40 mph are possible. With the drier airmass settling in,
relative humidities will fall to around 10%, working to further
cure fuels. There are currently no plans for watches or
warnings, however a few locations in western Nevada valleys may
reach critical fire weather conditions for a few hours, so
caution should be exercised to prevent new fire starts. HRICH
