408 FXUS66 KSGX 152040 AFDSGX Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 140 PM PDT Sat Jun 15 2024 .SYNOPSIS... A cooling trend will occur after today`s warm temperatures across the region, as a trough to the north brings greater influence. As the trough pushes into our area, we can expected near to slightly below average temperatures and greater cloud coverage west of the mountains. A ridge of high pressure will come back to the region by the end of the week, providing warmer weather. && .DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE... SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES... High pressure over the southwestern U.S. is leading to another day of heat across the deserts. Temperatures are reaching near the 110 degree mark early this afternoon and will sneak up a bit more over the next few hours. A trough over the Pacific Northwest will deepen over the West Coast by Sunday and Monday. This will lead to greater onshore flow, cooling inland areas by 5 to 10 degrees by tomorrow. No matter how hot it gets, remember that the sun angle is more direct in the month of June, so keep that sunscreen and water handy! Low clouds will once again impact areas near the coast by Sunday morning as the marine layer slowly deepens, but will still be thin enough to lead to patchy fog (locally dense). This onshore push will also provide increased winds across the mountains and deserts. NBM probabilities paint a moderate to high chance in seeing wind gusts over 30 MPH for these areas, best chances in places along Interstate 10 in the San Gorgonio Pass and along Route 78 in the Anza-Borrego Desert. The troughing pattern will stay in place through around Thursday with minimal temperature changes and low clouds forming each night and morning west of the mountains. Ensemble guidance is in agreement on ridging moving back into the region by later next week. This will bring more warmer weather with a shallower marine layer staying near coastal areas. && .AVIATION... 152030Z...Coast/Valleys...Mostly clear skies will prevail with mostly unrestricted VIS through this evening, except for patchy BKN stratus at the beaches with bases 600-1000 ft MSL, mostly diminishing by 22Z. Stratus will be delayed tonight but spread up to 20 miles inland after 07Z Sun with bases 700-1100 ft MSL and tops to 1300 ft MSL with an increasing trend in cloud base height, especially after 14Z Sun. Local VIS 1-3 miles in BR will occur 08Z- 15Z Sun mainly in the coastal valleys. Stratus will clear much slower Sun, mostly 17Z-20Z. Mountains/Deserts...SKC with unrestricted VIS will continue through Sun. Areas of wind gusts 25-35 kt from the west will occur on the desert mountain slopes and into the deserts from 21Z today through Sun, along with weak to MOD UDDFS. PSP could have gusts to 25 kt from 23Z today through 04Z Sun. && .MARINE... Northwest winds may gust to around 20 knots at times in the outer waters near San Clemente Island each afternoon and evening through Monday. Otherwise, no hazardous marine conditions are expected through Thursday. && .BEACHES... A combination of a west swell of around 6 feet/10 seconds (outer waters) and south swells of around 2 feet/14 seconds becoming 18 seconds Monday will bring surf of 3-6 feet along with a high rip current risk through Monday. The surf and rip current risk will gradually lower around Tuesday. && .SKYWARN... Skywarn activation is not requested.
