672 FXUS66 KSTO 170900 AFDSTO Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 200 AM PDT Tue Sep 17 2024 .Synopsis... Dry today then cooler unsettled weather tonight through Wednesday. Lingering showers over the Sierra Nevada Thursday, otherwise drier and warmer conditions into early next week. && .Discussion... Dry weather expected today with slight warming as short wave upper ridging, ahead of next storm system, moves through NorCal. Another short wave trough then progged to drop into West Coast long wave tonight into Wednesday. This will bring another round of unsettled weather. POPs increase from N to S tonight with widespread chance of showers over the CWA Wednesday. Best instabilities depicted over the foothills and mountains for potential thunderstorms. This wave is not as cold aloft as the previous system, and 5H cold core remains offshore. As a result, bulk of precip in mountains expected to be liquid as snow levels remain well above pass levels. Upper low is progged to continue to dig south along the CA coast to near Point Conception by 12z Thu, then slowly progress across CA towards AZ into Friday. Precip threat continues Thursday over the Sierra Nevada, then dry weather by the end of the week. Warming trend Thursday into Friday with high temperatures remaining slightly below normal. && .EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Saturday THROUGH Tuesday)... Dry weather expected through the extended forecast period as high pressure extends inland over NorCal. Warming trend forecast over the weekend into early next week with 90s returning in the Central Valley and 60s to 80s for the mountains and foothills. && .AVIATION...
