Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
830 PM PDT Fri Jun 28 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Today and Saturday will be characterized by mostly sunny
skies, above-average temperatures, and breezy southwest winds. On
Sunday, monsoonal moisture moves back into Arizona, returning
precipitation chances for Mohave County each day through the
forecast period. Elsewhere, temperatures continue to climb through
the work week.

.UPDATE...Very dry air has overtaken the region with this afternoons
00z VEF sounding sampling only 0.19 inches of precipitable water.
This has kept our region convection free today with dry
southwesterly breezes. The current forecast is in good shape with no
update needed.

.DISCUSSION...Today through next Friday.

The shortwave trough mentioned in previous discussions passed
through the area yesterday and ushered in very dry air. The 12Z Las
Vegas sounding yesterday morning measured 1.11" of Precipitable
Water (PWAT) in the atmosphere. This morning`s 12Z sounding measured
0.17" - nearly an inch drop. This dry air coupled with breezy
southwest winds will increase the danger of new wildfire starts and
wildfire spreads. Outdoor burning is thus discouraged, as is the use
of fireworks.

Smoke will continue to impact visibilities in the Sierra Nevada and
the Owens Valley over the next few days as a result of several fires
in Fresno County. Early Saturday morning, surface-level smoke will
creep southward through the Owens Valley, which will likely keep low
temperatures elevated.

On Sunday, monsoonal moisture returns to Arizona, with chances of
precipitation in Mohave County each day through the remainder of the
forecast period. Elsewhere, expect breezy afternoons, mostly sunny
skies, and gradually increasing temperatures.

A ridge of high pressure will meander inland from the Pacific late-
week that will allow temperatures to rise above 10 degrees above-
average going into the weekend. HeatRisk values climb from
widespread "Moderate" on Tuesday to widespread "Major" and valley
"Extreme" by Friday.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Persistent south-southwest wind
components will continue tonight through Saturday under clear skies.
Gusts 20-25 knots will occur during the afternoon and early evening
hours.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...General south-southwest winds will persist across most
of the region through Saturday under clear skies. Gusts 20-25 knots
can be expected during the afternoon and early evening hours. The
exception will be KBIH where winds will remain 10 to 12 knots or
less and follow diurnal trends with south-southeast winds in the
afternoon and light northwest components late evening and
overnight.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report
