044 FXUS65 KBOI 230249 AFDBOI Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Boise ID 849 PM MDT Sat Jun 22 2024 .DISCUSSION... Hot afternoon maximum temperatures running 15 to 20 degrees above normal were observed across southwestern Idaho and southeastern Oregon this afternoon. It doesn`t appear that any record highs were broken today...but we were within a couple of degrees of breaking records in most areas. For example...Boise reached a high of 102 which was 2 degrees cooler than the record high for the date, set in 1988. Light winds, clear skies and a very dry atmosphere will allow for excellent radiational cooling overnight. Another hot sunny day is on tap for tomorrow, but it will be a little breezier in the afternoon in most areas. && .AVIATION...VFR. Mostly clear skies through Sunday. Hot temperatures will bring high density altitudes. Reduced visibilities from smoke near a prescribed fire in SW Idaho. Surface winds: variable 10 kt or less becoming W-SW 10-20 kt with gusts to 30 kt after Sun/18Z, strongest in the higher terrain. Winds aloft at 10kft MSL: W-SW 15- 25 kt. KBOI...VFR. Mostly clear skies. Hot temperatures will bring high density altitudes. Surface winds: SE 5-10 kt this evening, becoming variable 10 kt or less after Sun/09Z, then N-NW 5-10 kt after Sun/15Z. && .PREV DISCUSSION... SHORT TERM...Tonight through Monday night...Southwest flow continues to strengthen over the region today with mostly clear skies. This flow will bring breezy conditions this afternoon (gusts 15-25 mph), and Sunday afternoon with gusts of 20-35 mph. Today will be the warmest day of the year so far with some places exceeding 100F in the lower valleys. Temperatures will be around 15 degrees above normal today and on Sunday. The record high at Boise is 104F today, and 103F on Sunday. Most places are around a 10-20 percent chance of exceeding record highs on Saturday and Sunday. Slightly cooler temperatures on Monday as a system passes by to the north, enhancing the winds again. Temperatures lower around 10 degrees on Monday, but still around 10 degrees above normal. LONG TERM...Tuesday through Saturday...Southwest flow returns on Tuesday with warmer temperatures through Wednesday. Lowest valleys will be near 100F again on Wednesday. Then an upper level trough approaches the Pacific NW on Wednesday into Thursday. As this system approaches, some monsoonal moisture may move northward into the area, introducing a slight chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon as a cold front moves through. The trough will move across WA and southern BC and Alberta Thursday through Saturday, bringing breezy conditions and much cooler temperatures. Temperatures on Friday lower to around 5 degrees below normal, or low 80s in the lowest elevations. && .BOI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... ID...None.
