Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boise ID
230 PM MDT Tue Sep 24 2024

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Thursday night...No significant
forecast changes. Upper ridge now over our CWA will shift
eastward tonight as a Gulf of Alaska upper trough approaches
the northwest coast. Wednesday will be the warmest day of the
week under southwest flow aloft between the ridge and trough.
Southwest surface winds will increase Wednesday in eastern
Oregon, especially Harney County, as a Pacific cold front comes
inland. Speeds 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph expected
there. The front will pass through eastern OR Wednesday evening
and western ID Wednesday night. Northern-most zones will have a
20-40 percent chance of showers and 10-20 percent chance of
thunderstorms Wednesday night as the front moves through. Other
zones will have only clouds. Winds will shift to moderate
west/northwest as the front passes. Thursday will become sunny
and about 8 degrees cooler than Wednesday, but still slightly
above normal. Wednesday night looks clear and cool with light
winds.

.LONG TERM...Friday through Tuesday...General ridging will
persist over the southwest, with the Pacific Northwest along
the edge of stronger westerly flow aloft, keeping the region
generally warm and dry throughout the period. A weak system
may move through the region Sunday/Monday, but will likely be
lacking in significant moisture, keeping precipitation chances
low. Temperatures remain 5-10 degrees above normal throughout
the weekend, with a gradual cooldown into early next week
expected.
