763 FNUS63 KFSD 180923 RFDFSD Rangeland Fire Danger Statement National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 423 AM CDT Wed Sep 18 2024 .DISCUSSION... Periods of showers and storms through Thursday. For today, a tight moisture gradient is expected near a boundary moving into south central SD this afternoon. Areas to the west of this gradient, especially those with more cured fuels, are expected to see critical fire conditions. This is expected to be to the east of our area, but will need to watch trends in western Gregory and Brule counties should the gradient be further east than expected. Southerly winds aren`t expected to be as strong today (especially west of the James River), with gusts up to 35 mph possible. Higher gusts are possible in thunderstorms. Rainfall amounts through Thursday night generally less than a quarter of an inch. Dry and warmer than average weather expected Friday. However, unsettled weather pattern returns for the weekend through early next week. Cooler than average temperatures favored. The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the low category this afternoon. Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture content of grasses, and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that the probability of a fast moving fire is low. Outdoor burning under these conditions can usually be with reasonable safety precautions, but should be monitored. OUTLOOK FOR THURSDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the low category. The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed. $$
