845 NOUS43 KGLD 301208 PNSGLD Public Information Statement National Weather Service Goodland KS 600 AM MDT Thu May 30 2024 ...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY... In 1879, a major tornado outbreak occurred from north central Kansas into southeast Nebraska. Tornadoes in Kansas killed 18 persons at Delphos and claimed 30 lives at Irving where two twisters struck within minutes of one another, reducing the small community to rubble. The second tornado was perhaps two miles wide and exhibited multiple vortices. In 1935, One of the worst weather related disasters hit the Tri State area. It was known as the Great Flood of 1935. The event began during the evening when thunderstorms produced an almost unbelievable amount of rain in Kit Carson and Yuma counties. Unofficial rainfall observers reported between 18 and 24 inches of rain during the evening. The rain drained into the Arikaree and Republican Rivers which proceeded to rapidly flood. A total of 113 lives were lost, mostly in Colorado and Nebraska, when flood waters arrived at night. Over twenty thousand head of cattle were killed. Several hundred miles of highways and railroads were destroyed. $$
