...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 2018, Eureka Kansas was struck by a rapidly
developing tornado which touched down at approximately
7:18 PM less than a mile to the southwest of town.  The
tornado rapidly intensified into a powerful EF-3 with
estimated winds of 152 mph as it ripped into the heart
town.  Numerous homes and business in Eureka were heavily
damaged.  Areas in the northeastern Eureka were
especially hard hit as this is where the majority of the
EF-3 damage was identified.  This tornado, thankfully,
didnt claim anyones life but, it did injure eight
individuals.  This event marked the second time in three
years Eureka was hit with a tornado of such power.  Some
homes damaged in this event were also damaged from the
event two years earlier.

In 1973, parts of Butler County were bombarded with
baseball sized hail.  No details were reported regarding
extent of damage or injuries.  In 1989, extremely
powerful severe thunderstorms broke out from the Central
Plains to the Upper Mississippi Valley.  In Kansas, the
most dangerous severe thunderstorms whip lashed Liberal
with 90 mph gusts and bombarded Quinter with 4 inch
diameter hail.In 2012, McCook Nebraska definitely
cooked when the mercury soared to 115 degrees.That set
a Nebraska state record for hottest temperature during
the month of June.
