In 2008, nature showered South Central Kansas with all kinds of attention, when numerous thunderstorms inundated the area with 5 to 12 inches of rain. Hardest hit was Wichita, where the west, northwest and north sides of the Air Capital were inundated by 10 to 12 inches.Mid Continent Airport (now Eisenhower Airport) set an all-time daily rainfall record by measuring 10.31 inches. This easily swamped the very old record of 6.82 inches that was measured on June 8th, 1923. && In 1977, thunderstorms deluged the Kansas City area with torrential rains early in the morning and again that evening. Some areas were drenched by 6 or more inches of rain twice that day. Independence `rained` supreme with an incredible 18 inches. The hideous flooding that resulted killed 25 and caused an estimated $80 million damage. Hardest hit was the Country Club Plaza where around 2,000 vehicles were towed following the storm of which 150 were pulled out of Brush Creek. In 1979, Hurricane Frederic slammed into Mobile Bay Alabama with sustained winds from 130 to 135 mph. Gusts around 145 mph were reported as the eye of the hurricane crossed Dauphin Island Alabama, just west of Mobile. The Category 4 hurricane produced a 15-foot storm surge near the mouth of Mobile Bay. At the time, Frederic was the costliest hurricane in United States history, causing a staggering $2.3 billion damage. He was the costliest natural disaster in Alabama history until the April 25th-28th, 2011 tornado outbreak that caused around $3.5 billion damage. In 1961, Super Typhoon Nancy walloped the Far Western Pacific for 17 days where sustained winds reportedly reached 215 MPH. She maintained Category 5 status for 5 1/2 days, a record for the Northern Hemisphere. Japan took a direct hit, where 172 were killed and around 3,185 were injured.
