Supercell thunderstorms developed across the central Sandhills during the early afternoon hours on June 7, 2024, along the intersection of a cold front, warm front, and inverted surface trough. These supercells quickly strengthened as they moved east and then eventually southeast into Custer County. The storms produced large hail, strong winds, and a tornado northeast of Arnold, Nebraska. .Tornado 10.7 miles Northeast of Arnold... Rating: EF-2 Estimated Peak Wind: 120 mph Path Length: 1.82 miles Path Width /maximum/: 50 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: June 7, 2024 Start Time: 5:19 PM Central Start Location: 10.7 miles northeast of Arnold, NE Start Lat/Lon: 41.54, -100.06 End Date: June 7, 2024 End Time: 5:25 PM Central Start Location: 11.3 miles northeast of Arnold, NE End Lat/Lon: 41.53, -100.03 The survey determined peak winds of 120 mph, which is indicative of EF-2 damage. The determination of 120 mph was from a row of power lines that were snapped at the base of the pole. Significant damage occurred to a irrigation system and accompanying pump house. Several pivot pipes were wrapped around the power lines and pump house. Several pipes were moved upwards of an estimated half mile. The tornado lifted as it encountered a line of mature trees approximate 1.8 miles southeast of where it formed.
